Světlana Fialová (1985) is a 4th year student at the Faculty of Art of the Technical University in Košice. Last year she spent a year in the studio of Vladimír Skrepl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
Světlana paints and draws stories from a real, virtual and media worlds, mingling comics heroes, objects of everyday life and parodies of fashion. The clean formal works alternates with conceptually-conceived series of photographs. On one hand, they parody deep-rooted clichés, while on the other they attempt to destroy traditional techniques, as is done with the drypoints which she tints with ordinary marker pens. The characters from Světlana's pictures and photographs are not wholly fictitious: the author herself often acts in them, either stylized in drawing compositions pieced together from segments of daily records, or posing directly in staged fashion photographs. The details of her drawing reveal her sensitivity and passion for stories from everyday life.
Světlana Fialová introduces one such everyday story in installation in etc. gallery which is neither drawn nor painted. The story she develops here, is from the realm of a girls' world: a girl's room and a girl's dream. It is room No.217.
It was originally created in a confined, anonymous space of the residence hall where the author lived during her stay at The Academy of Fine Arts.
The installation called "Hiding Places" expresses frustration with a total lack of privacy, and with an effort to escape this frustration which, despite our best efforts, can only lead to an even more frustrating result. A similar tone appears in the second installation, dealing with solving personal deprivation caused by the dismal material conditions of Světlana's roommates. In the first plan, it appears as a redeeming substitution of something genuine and luxurious for something accessible and cheap, while in the second plan the feelings of futility and frustration caused by reality reappears.
