The selection of art films turns to the past and future of communities that bear traces of the pressure of Western domination in their bodies and in their everyday lives. Yet these communities retain their own cultures, stories and metaphysical frameworks, defying the hegemonic logic of the West. From the perspective of white modernity, the alternative worlds depicted in the curated film series may appear as fictions, allegories, or alternative realities. However, they represent very real forms of existence and memory intertwined with visions of the future. Time and relations to human and non-human bodies and landscapes are not as linear or unambiguous in these narratives as they are in the European cultural tradition.
This layering of worlds, narratives and relationships is represented by the mask, a common feature of these films and a symbol of the dynamic interplay of identity and diverse phenomena. Here, the mask is not merely an object or a prop, but a mediator that enables the invisible to be seen and the unsuspected to be realised. It opens access to other realities, stories and ways of being.
