Restless Image II: Limits of Motion

Date: 14.05.2019 — 16.06.2019
Beginning: 19:00

The second part of the Restless Image project, titled the Limits of Motion, was developed by audiovisual archivist Matěj Strnad together with curator Anna Remešová. It explores the politics of presentation and the archiving of moving image within the context of a non-profit gallery. As a part of the project, a multimedia library will be created in order to grant people access to videos that have been presented in the gallery since 2017. This seemingly simple task embodies many problems of a practical, legal and economic nature, which will be outlined in several talks to be given alongside the project. The aim of these debates is to engage the audience and invited guests in the process of articulating possible strategies of dealing with moving image works. Whereas the topic of the first debate focuses on the relation between the gallery and audiovisual artists, the second discussion will explore the role of established collections. The final meeting will offer a platform for the proposition of particular strategies and procedures, with some of them being subsequently adopted by the etc. gallery.

Public talk 14/05/2019, 19:00, location: etc. gallery

The event is in Czech language only.

What are the conditions of production and circulation of moving image works within the context of the etc. gallery? This question will be discussed by the project co-author and archivist Matěj Strnad, artists Tomáš Hlaváček, Jiří Žák and Lucie Rosenfeldová, and curators Alžběta Bačíková and Anna Remešová. All of the invited artists have at some time collaborated with the gallery and will discuss the issues related to the gallery’s responsibility for the production of new works (based on both direct and indirect support), seemingly unmarked presentation or to the incorporation of their works in to the media library. The subject of the debate will be both the expectations of the participants and the common practice. What is the role of a non-profit gallery in the production process? What are the different approaches to the production, presentation and preservation of moving image when it comes to the local art scene? And if there was a manual promoting a cohesive and open approach to moving image, what form could it take?

The second debate organised within the project Restless Image II: The Limits of Motion elaborates on the previous discussion, which took place at the etc. gallery and explored the conditions of production, distribution and conservation of moving image. The subject of the follow-up debate is the perspective and role of public collections, as well as their relation to artists, independent platforms, private institutions and the art market. Jitka Hlaváčková (Prague City Gallery), Ondřej Chrobák (Moravian Gallery), Michal Novotný (National Gallery), Sylva Poláková (National Film Archive), František Zachoval (Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové) and Vjera Borozan (Artyčok.TV) will discuss the relation of the institutions they represent to audiovisual artworks and their acquisitions. Do the particular institutions have a vision – or a conceptual plan – that reflects the variable technological conditions of contemporary art? What forms of a institutional care should these institutions offer when it comes to the moving image? Should it be in terms of production, showcasing or conservation? What contracts should they have with the artists? The debated is hosted by Matěj Strnad, the co-author of the exhibition The Limits of Motion, and is an outcome of a long-term research of moving image by the etc. gallery. It should contribute to the production of a manual that summarises particular strategies and procedures related to the management of moving image.

The final meeting within the project Limits of Motion is devoted to the development of a “moving image manual” – a written code of practice the gallery aims to follow when dealing with audiovisual artworks. The manual takes into consideration the preceding research and two public discussions on the subject (https://etcgalerie.cz/en/neklid-obrazu-ii/). It will focus – among others – on loans and exhibition policies, production, and conservation of moving image works. Everyone, who would like to be present or actively participate in the development of the manual, is very much welcomed. In case you are not able to attend but would like to participate, there is also the possibility of sharing comments and ideas electronically. Please contact us on mail.etcgalerie@gmail.com.
